Don’t worry! There are two decent mobile internet service providers in Cabarete and the Dominican Republic has some of the best SIM card deals in the Caribbean. You can get 1GB of data for as little as about US$5. So whether you are an Instagram Influencer or a Digital Nomad in Cabarete, you’ll be happily and inexpensively connected.
Both operators offer prepaid SIM cards that are available for sale at calmados, supermarkets, pharmacies, official stores. 2G, 3G, and 4G are available for unlocked GSM phones. Purchase a SIM cards by simply showing your passport. Add prepaid credit via vouchers (“recargas” in Spanish) sold in shops and supermarkets.
Keep in mind that once you add credit, the credit is usually good for a few months. If you don’t add credit to the number after six months, you lose the phone number.
Claro RD (formerly Codetel)
Claro is the mobile internet market leader in the Dominican Republic, and the Claro network has the best coverage and best deals. It offers 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE services, however, you will find that 4G is pretty much not available in the Cabarete area even though it seems to show up on the Claro coverage map. Purchase a Claro SIM for a few hundred pesos at official stores and approved resellers. Prepaid credit can be purchased online, but you will find that PIN code scratch cards purchased from shops are just as convenient because you can buy them even at fruit stands.

Altice Dominicana (previously Orange and Tricom merged)
Altice is the second largest mobile internet service provider in the Dominican Republic. It offers 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE wireless services, however, you will find that 4G is not available in the Cabarete area. Purchase an Altice SIM card for a few hundred pesos from official stores and approved resellers. Just like Claro, prepaid credit can be purchased online, but you will find that PIN code scratch cards are just as convenient since they are literally sold everywhere.
The prepaid SIM doesn’t come with default data. To activate the internet press #100# and choose option “paqueticos.” There you will walk through a series of steps to choose the the package you want.
