KITEBOARDING FOR BEGINNERS

BY CABARETE KITE POINT SCHOOL ON KITE BEACH IN CABARETE, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Kiteboarding For Beginners – Yay!

We know how intimidating it can be when you are looking into kiteboarding for beginners. First of all, it can be dangerous if you don’t take kitesurfing lessons from an experienced professional. Secondly, it ain’t cheap. At Cabarete Kite Point Kiteboarding School, we do our very best to make sure you feel safe and get the best bang for your buck.

How Long Do Kite Lessons For Beginners Take?

That’s a loaded question! Most beginners need somewhere around 9 hours of kiteboarding lessons in our experience. Of course, that is, give or take. You will find that some schools offer a beginner kite lesson package for 6 hours, and some offer a beginner kite lesson package for 10 hours. The good news is, at Cabarete Kite Point, you only pay for what you use. So if you learn in 6 hours (like a boss), you only pay for 6 hours. We like to keep it as simple as possible.

*For the record, most people can handle 2-3 hours of lessons per day.

I’m Not Fit Enough For 9 Hours of Kite Lessons.

Shut your dirty mouth! Our oldest beginner was in his 70s, so we just aren’t taking any excuses from you. You don’t have to be young or fit to take lessons. And NO you don’t have to have great upper body strength either. You know what you need to know when it comes to taking kite lessons? How to swim. You need to know how to swim. The end. We will help you sort the rest.

9 HOUR BEGINNER PACKAGE EXPLAINED

LESSON 1 - 3 HOURS

Basics of Kite Control

This is the basics of kite control and handling. You will be flying one of the latest Cabrinha kites and you will go through the equipment terminology and setup, the wind effects and wind-window theory. You will learn how to fly your kite, hooked into the harness using the power of the kite in a safe environment, how to use your safety system, launch and land, and fly the kite with the de-power loop.

LESSON 2 - 3 HOURS

Water Control & Body Drag

The next step brings you into the water. You will learn how to get power from the kite, change direction with your kite in the water, how to re-launch a crashed kite from the water, and how to self-rescue. You will also learn some additional and essential body drag techniques such as upwind body dragging (you will need this skill to retrieve the board after a crash).

LESSON 3 - 3 HOURS

Board Control & Waterstart

We set you up on a board and teach you the water start theory: board and body positioning while piloting the kite, diving the kite to enable standing up on the board, and controlling the speed and the direction. This final level covers the remaining topics to make you a totally independent kiteboarder. You will know how to choose a spot, rig your gear, stay safe, and you should be able to ride back and forth from the beach.

*Most people need 3-4 days to finish 9 hours of lessons

**The aforementioned should be taken as an explanation of the steps you will follow during your course and the estimated amount of hours each step will take. Not everyone needs the specified amount of hours for each step.
