Back in the day, the internet service providers in Cabarete didn’t have a stellar reputation. That has changed in the past two years or so. insert slow clap here These days, we even have access to fiber. gasp Keep in mind as you research accommodation in Cabarete that many hotels and condos advertise a high-speed connection, but that doesn’t mean you will experience actual high speeds. Often a hotel or condo owner will buy only 1 or 2 Mbps of speed to be shared among several rooms. So, ask a lot of questions if internet is super important in your life. Below we will fill you in on everything we know about each provider.
Cable Del Norte
Cable Del Norte piggybacks off the Comcast network, but it is a standalone company. They provide both cable with up to 20 Mbps and fiber with up to 50 Mbps. Although the cable connection with Cable Del Norte is pretty darn stable, obviously the fiber connection is going to be more stable. The sad news is fiber isn’t available in all of Cabarete yet. The AWESOME news is fiber IS available on Kite Beach (we use it at home and Vitamin D Cafe). To sign up, head over to Media Luna Plaza. The office is upstairs. You will need your ID for creating an account, and you can easily cancel your contract at any time. It’s good to know the company is pretty small, so you get personal service from knowledgeable technicians who are available seven days a week. Another advantage to Cable Del Norte is you can ask for a US IP address.
Claro
Claro is larger and less expensive than Cable Del Norte. Although they do have fiber, it hasn’t made its way to any part of Cabarete yet. Even so, their cable internet reached up to 20 Mbps making it a great option. It’s not as convenient as Cable Del Norte since Claro’s central office is located in Puerto Plata and you will have to travel there for anything contract related. You will need your ID, and the contract from Claro is a little more binding. New customers will have to start with 2 Mbps while you establish a payment history and upgrade after a credit check. Otherwise, you can pay 1000 pesos to avoid all that and receive a higher speed right away. Once you are all signed up, paying your bill is easy because there are satellite offices sprinkled all over town. Keep in mind these customer service reps don’t have much power to do anything if you have a problem. You are better off calling their main office where standard procedure is a seven-day wait estimate for service. However, according to our sources, they usually actually come by within one to three days.
